How This Works
Reading time = total words ÷ reading speed in words per minute (wpm). Academic reading is typically slower than leisure reading because it requires comprehension, note-taking and re-reading of difficult passages. The average academic reading speed for studying (not skimming) is 200–250 wpm.
Active reading strategies: preview headings and abstract first (2 mins), then read for the argument rather than word by word. Use a pointer (finger or pen) to guide your eyes. Eliminate subvocalisation (saying words in your head). Take brief margin notes rather than highlighting — this forces active processing. For journal articles: abstract → conclusion → then read in full if needed.
