How This Works
Equal split: total rent divided by number of housemates. Room-size split: each person's share = (their room size ÷ total room sizes) × total rent. The room-size method is fairer when rooms differ significantly in size — a double en-suite paying the same as a single box room is objectively unfair.
If your tenancy is a joint tenancy (all names on the lease), you are all jointly liable for the full rent — meaning if one person doesn't pay, the others must cover it or all face eviction. If individual rooms are on separate contracts, only the non-payer faces consequences. Prevention: agree a house account where everyone pays their share by DD on payday, and landlord payments come from the house account.
